Tuesday’s Top Ten: Things I Can Do Without For The Holidays

10. Gimmicky sales days like “Black Friday”, “Cyber Monday”, “Super Santa Saturday”. Okay, I made the last one up.
9. Commercials mimicking the classic holiday stop-motion specials. Yes ALLTEL I’m talking to you!
8. The Maxwell House commercial from twenty years ago where the kid comes home and wakes everyone up with the smell of coffee.
7. News reports on how retailers are hurting. Excitedly, I rush out only to see the malls are packed.
6. News reports of George Bush flipping the switch for the tree at the Obama House. That’s gonna tick off at least one person on the email list!
5. Eggnog. Every year I think I like it, then I have some only to become sick to my stomach.
4. Not getting toys for Xmas. I don’t know when it became acceptable for me to stop getting cool loot.
3. Mall elves. Sorry little people, I know this is “your time of year” but I don’t get a time of year and it’s kind of creepy.
2. Holiday movies. I get it. They all lived happily ever after.
1. Holiday compilation CDs. Do I really need to hear Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson belt out the songs that have been done 150 million times before? NO!

Bah Humbug. Next Tuesday maybe I’ll do a Top Ten about what I like about the holidays…but right now, after writing and rereading that list…I’m too *peeved* to think about it.

Good Monday morning! I hope everyone had an awesome holiday and weekend! Mine was interesting.

We drove to Boca Raton Thanksgiving morning. We had a pet sitter who was going to take care of our dogs for the 24 or so hours we’d be out of town. Actually, she was a substitute pet sitter.

On our way to Boca (actually an hour into our drive and a second call to voicemail) the pet sitter’s mom called me. Her daughter was ill (her stomach) and was sleeping but should be fine.

It took four and a half hours to get to Boca. We were there an hour and I got another call from the pet sitter’s mom. They were taking her to the hospital - she was sorry, but her daughter wouldn’t be able to take care of the dogs.

The real problem was that they were the only people with a key.

Here would have been my reply last Thanksgiving:

“Seriously? You’re calling in sick for your daughter? There’s no way she can take care of the dogs? Is there anyone else? I just drove four and a half hours and I’m eating cold turkey. There’s no way anyone in your family can help us out? THIS IS JUST GREAT! Whatever…click…”

My reply THIS Thanksgiving day:

“Seriously? I understand. Okay, we’ll figure something out. We may have someone who can help us out. Don’t worry about it - we hope she’s okay.”

Soft. Totally soft. We ended up leaving an hour later and driving home. 9 hours driving for cold turkey. But having a kid changes your perspective. I have softened in that regard.

Actually, what really gets my goad is I had to miss a flag football game with a bunch of friends from the West Palm Beach area. That made me angry. The subsequent abuse I received for “bailing” on the game was worse.

On the bright side… I slept in my own bed, my family and I returned safe and sound and I got some quality time at home. So I’m thankful for that.

But I was REALLY looking forward to that football game…

Happy Thanksgiving!!! Hopefully you’ll be/we’re stuffed with turkey and not too sleepy to catch up with RTS!

Personally, I’d like to take a quick second to say I am extremely grateful this year for many things. First and foremost, the birth of my son. Who knew that it would be so much hard work? Haha! Seriously - why didn’t anyone tell me! My son is extremely handsome and I love every second with him. I’ve even come to appreciate it on occassion when he’s screaming in my ear. I’m thankful for my wife who’s been with me over 14 years. Who knew she would be so much work? Seriously. I’m thankful that I had the chance to hang out with my brothers at a Florida Gator football game. I’ve very lucky to have grown up with two of the best people in the world. I’m thankful for my dad - and that he found happiness with another after my mom passed away eight years ago - coincidentally on the same day my son was born and I’m extremely thankful that a day of such great sorrow has been replaced with one of joy. I still mourn my mom’s passing, I will now be fortunate enough to enjoy that day once again.

I’m thankful for the multitude of friends I’ve been blessed to spend time with throughout my lifetime. They’ll never know how much they’ve influenced me and how much they mean to me. I’m also thankful for the great people I’ve worked with over the years and how they’ve affected me both personally and professionally.

Finally, I’m thankful for Rick the Stick. This comic strip takes a lot of work and I would easily double it just for the pure satisfaction of it. Of course, I’d love to make a million dollars at it, but that’s unlikely so I’ll just do it for the joy of it for now.

I know I said finally, but thanks to you who read my drivel every day - or at least lift your fingers to delete the email! I appreciate it! Thank you!

Good Monday morning everyone! I hope you had a great weekend and are excited for Thanksgiving and a short work week! I actually took next Monday off so I have a FIVE day weekend coming up - WOOOHOOO! My Thanksgiving break actually includes a trip to West Palm Beach to see family and friends so that is a bonus - not to mention that we get to show off RocketBoy! I also get to play football next Friday so the weekend and Monday will be time in recovery I’m sure.

The strip is done for the week - which is AWESOME! I also have an additional two and a half weeks written which is INCREDIBLE!!! I’m bringing my drawing pad to West Palm in hopes of getting my buffer up to two weeks - so wish me luck!

There’s finally a sense of a balance of normalcy again as my nearly four month old is beginning to settle into a routine of sorts and my wife and I are getting better at handling an infant. Not that we weren’t good at it, but you’re learning as you go (which no one tells you BEFORE you have kids) so it’s not as easy as you’d think. The good thing is, that you’re never as bad at it as you think either so as long as you keep your child happy and healthy, you’re doing a good job. Our son seems to like smiling and laughing and that’s a GREAT thing!

Lovely, lovely Friday - oooooh how I missed you! Hopefully you’re entertained by the strip this week. Speaking of which, I got word back this week that Rick The Stick will be published in the California Times. That’s the California University of Pennsylvania school newspaper that it all started at back in…oh…let’s just say a while ago. I’m very proud to be back and I can’t wait.
