Rick The Stick – a comic on the Interwebs

Aaah, sweet sweet Friday. The day that can do no wrong. With the promise of the weekend on the cusp, Friday my friends is the jewel of the week. I have no idea what that means.

The strip is running full steam in color now and I’ve been doing some research and I noticed that a lot of the big-time comics out there – those with thousands of readers, compared to you my friends who are part of the tens who read this – only publish in black and white.

I think this is for a couple of reasons:

• If you’re going to publish a book at any point, to make it cost effective to print and for readers to buy, they’re usually in black and white. By producing the webcomic in color, I have to go back and “uncolor” any color strips. Considering I’m on the verge of hitting 250 strips – most are in black and white for now – in the future, that would be quite a chore.
• Newsprint – while the newspaper industry is in a death spiral and thousands of people are losing their jobs – on the oft chance you do get noticed by a syndicate, or published in a paper, they may require your strip to be in black and white. I know this is a week excuse, but it’s still a possibility. For the record dear reader, Rick the Stick is published in the Cal Times, the school newspaper of the University of California, Pennsylvania. My good ol’ alma mater and birthplace of Rick the Stick – woohoo.
• Simply: it requires a lot more work.

With that in mind, I don’t know how long I can keep up the coloring. I’d rather put out a top tier mediocre comic in black and white rather than a schlocky mediocre color comic. Scratch that – I’d actually love to move up to schlocky mediocre comic status! I haven’t made up my mind either way, but I’m just looking into it…
