Friday, Friday – WOOOHOOOO!!!

I’ve been watching some shows & movies lately and I wanted to get your thoughts if you’ve seen them.

Californication: This is a really good – sometimes really weird show. David Duchovny is solid as are all the other characters. You see Duchovny’s a chain smoking, womanizing, drinking writer. All the characters have major flaws and somehow it all just works pretty seamlessly. As a guy, one of the bonuses is that you get to see plenty of female skin. The ladies are left with a lot of half-naked Duchovny shots. For me, it’s a fair trade off. Regardless, at the end of one of the seasons, there’s a major thing that happens and I’m hoping it doesn’t ruin the aforementioned chemistry between the characters. See it if you want to know what the hell I’m talking about. You won’t be sorry – actually, we breezed right through every DVD we got sometimes watching four episodes at a clip.

W.: As in George W. Bush. As in wtf? I realize this is not a true biography yet is based on real events, but if ‘W.’ is half as bad as he’s portrayed, then I don’t get two things. And I don’t mean Josh Brolin‘s portrayal. Actually, all the characterizations are awesome. First is the obvious – how did he become President? And I think that should be a bi-partisan question. Second, he is portrayed a half-wit and buffoon who can’t get out of his own way. I realize this is a caricature of him, but c’mon! How did anyone like the guy!! After thinking about it now, I’ll write that one off as a Liberal slant. It has to be. There’s also a must see short in the bonus features. Don’t miss that one – it was scarier than the movie!!!

Out of Africa: This is an oldie, but a goodie. If you can stand the nearly 3 hours. Meryl Streep is hotter than I remember her and she nails the accent of Danish-born Karen Blixen. I saw this when it came out (I was a little younger in 1985) and I really didn’t remember any of it. But it is a very, very good film. Since it’s based in the early 1900′s it hasn’t lost much in it’s portrayal. See it.

Next in my queue is Tropic Thunder and the Dark Night. I can’t wait for either. Have any recommendations? Lemme hear ‘em!!

Good morning!!

RAlonzo goes where no man has gone before!

I was soo excited about getting this photo of the first person to wear Rick the Stick’s gear, but I didn’t want to post the photo yesterday because I wanted it to be featured on it’s own (yesterday was the diet post – and Wednesdays are about me). So here it is. My coworker, who won this shirt because of his many exemplary comments (okay, some weren’t – well most weren’t exemplary…and you could argue that some just didn’t make sense), RAlonzo!!! Congrats to RAlonzo who also won another shirt (which he got for his girlfriend) and will be sending us a photo of her as well. The shirt looks really good on RAlonzo – I’m very proud to work with such a well dressed dude.

I also sent out the third shirt to frequent commenter and reader who helped me get my Great Grandfather (and thus, Rick the Stick) on Wikipedia – Todd!!! Todd is out of town giving a speech about world piece (spelled that way on purpose). He promised to send a photo for next week!

Congratulations to all three shirt winners! I am honored that you’d consider donning something that came from this giant dome and little brain of mine!

Good morning!

It’s Weight Loss Wednesday – we’ll dig a little bit more into ‘Rick the Stick Diet’!!! Recently my Netflix account has been getting a workout of it’s own. I’ll touch base with you tomorrow to get your thoughts on some things I’ve been watching.

To recap our last three ‘Rick the Stick Diet’ posts:

Water – Drink plenty of it.
Eating – Smaller portions. Use your ‘sane brain’ to your advantage.
Motivation – Set a goal and find the mechanism that gets you going – and keeps you going.

Last week may have been a little preachy – and if you thought it was, then I apologize. I’ve already given you the key ingredients to what has worked for me. I’ve lost 40 pounds in 4 months – and I’ve done it without killing myself. If you think about it in the past, four months is not a long time. But if you think about having to wait for something for four months, it seems like a lifetime. The problem is perception. Regardless, one of the biggest challenges during my four months of losing weight (besides finding the mechanism that’s kept me going) has been focus. It’s difficult to stay focused for four months when you’ve been eating almost every four hours for years of your life.

I’ll be honest. Work helps. Being in a routine helps. Employing the ‘sane brain’ is easy, resisting temptation and maintaining focus – is hard.

My wife will break out some bread with dinner. I love me some whole grain bread with olive oil – but I say no. At first it was REALLY hard to combat, now it’s just difficult. I tell myself, when I hit my goal weight and I am focusing on maintaining my weight as opposed to losing it, then I’ll have a small portion of bread.

My wife will break out her ice cream dessert as a snack. I love me the ice cream – all kinds – but I say…maybe. I decided I needed an alternative. At first I found low calorie substitutions which are great – but eventually I just had to said no. That’s 140 calories – which takes at least a 10 minute run on the treadmill to burn off. And if you read my last post about how I feel about jogging right now, then you’ll know why cutting that 140 calories was easier than adding more to my exercise routine.

Note: my wife is not evil, she’s just not overweight like I am – so why should she suffer?

It’s easy to fall in love with losing weight. People notice when you lose 10 pounds. They’re complimentary, they ask you how you did it. People are impressed when you lose 20 pounds! They want to know what you’re doing and how you’re doing it and when you’re doing it and they start thinking about how they can do it. People are amazed when you lose 30 pounds!! They ask you all these great questions about what you’re secret is. You see? The weight loss for me, has become conversation about me. I may be dumb, but I’m not stoopid and if there’s one thing I’m an expert on – it’s me.

And there is the problem. I start thinking I’m a superman. I’m my own hero. Keep in mind, that I’m the one who got my fat self into this problem. I’ve had to work hard to dig myself out. I should be proud, I should have had to work hard to lose the weight, I should stay focused. Going back to my last post again, my motivation was to get to 222 by the time my son reaches his first birthday. That’s what I need to focus on. Not the number of pounds I’ve lost, not the ‘attaboys’ and not the pats on the back. I want to be healthy and I want to see my son grow up. I want to see him graduate high school. I want to help him pick a college (University of Florida or ELSE!!! . I want to live a better life.

So there it is. I’m doing it for me. It’s what I want. It’s what I am doing. I told you back when I started, that this was all about me and I’ve been honest with myself. And I’m staying focused. When I achieve my current goal, I’ll set a new one. Actually, I already have: I am going to get cut. I am going to blast weights like I never have before. And I’m going to do it because I want to be physically able to play ball with my son. I’m going to do it so I can grow old with my wife and live a long and healthy life.

Good morning…

Hey folks! Hope you’re having a great start to the week! Me? Oh thanks for asking – I’m a little under the weather, but that won’t stop me from getting to a couple of housekeeping notes…

I didn’t get a chance to mention yesterday, but there’s been a few minor tweaks to the site. If you want to follow me on twitter, there’s a little birdy just below the comic strip. I’m not saying I’m the most verbose, witty or clever, but I do post little reminders about the strip. Even I forget to check out some of my favorite webcomics from time to time so it’s always handy when I see a link and I can just click on it and catch up.

The big difference – and I haven’t seen this anywhere else so I’m a little proud I came up with it on my own* – is I’m testing a new feature where Rick explains the comic. The images are temporarily is lost on email subscribers – but they still get the comments. So until I fix that, hopefully they’ll forgive me. For example, you can see Rick is talking about when he ran into Winchester. I added this so people who get the feed on FB or other RSS feeders without the image of the comic, they’ll have an idea of what the strip is about for each day. I’ll also throw in some backstory and other tidbits that may help uncover some of the overall storyline.

Also, I was glad to see my man RAlonzo wearing his RTS exclusive “I’m just not into ewe” T-shirt today. It looked good on the big guy and he’s promised a picture of him and his girlfriend who got the “Ooh Poo!” shirt. I’m also sending one out to our other preeminent poster Todd who helped get my Great Grandfather listed on Wikipedia.

Finally, I asked for feedback from my cohorts of the WebComicPlanet Collective and one of the first items that came back regarding my ad banners was awesome. Good Monday morning!

A quick note before I get to my weigh in update… You may have noticed a new feature where Rick actually gets a chance to explain the strip. It’s there for two reasons. The first is to give Rick a voice – and he may be able to include some back story or tidbits that put things in context and secondly, it’s to let the people who see the tidbits on Facebook and other sites that don’t show a preview of the comic what’s up in today’s strip.

I don’t usually say much about sports here, but I’d like to give a hearty shout out to the Florida Gators hoping they bring home a National Championship in college football tonight.

On to my other passion – Rick the Stick. It’s almost a full week through the color comics. Not much on the comment area.

Today’s strip features Joy again as it’s setting up the storyline. After reviewing the strip I’m really not happy with the look of Joy in the 4th panel – she’s supposed to be looking over her shoulder at her butt in the mirror, but it just looks like her head’s on backwards. I think it looked better in the sketch. Bummer. I’ll have to do better – my apologies for the less than average mediocrity.

Have any more suggestions for improvement on the strip? There’s a whole comment section! Let’s hear them!!!
