Good morning

This week is experiment week. I’m going to try something completely new. Well at least since last July. I’m going back to my early morning routine. What does this mean to you? Not much, but this blog part is about me. The comment section and the polls are about you. If you want the inner scoop on how mediocrity in real life generates mediocrity in a webcomic – please read on. If not, please read on. The choice is yours and I’m glad to make it for you.

ENOUGH about you – getting back to me. I’ll be getting up around 4-4:30am so I can work on the comic. I’ve been only getting 4-5 hours of sleep a night and that tank is getting low, so it’s time to switch it up. Besides, I can’t let my wife go to bed alone EVERY night!! So ideally, I’ll be sawing ZZZZZZZs from 10pm on. This means the posts you read here – normally done the night before – will be a day old. Why should you care? Because despite the born on date of these blog posts being a day earlier than their posted, you’ll get a refreshed post. Not the end of the day post.

Dah – who am I kidding. No matter how you brew it, it’s still just watered down hodge-podge. I also noticed this past week that I’ve burned through my entire buffer, so I need to get my act together.

On the flip side, since the beginning of March, I am down 34 pounds. I need to get down 19 more to get to my ideal weight of 222. Oh and I have to do it in 45 days. That’s another benefit of going into the morning routine. Other than playing basketball at 5:30am three days a week, I’ll be out jogging (and it took me two years to get over the HATE of jogging) getting my sweat on shedding more pounds. Now, I’m no fitness guru, but I’m no slouch either. I’ll divulge the Rick the Stick Diet* over the coming weeks. I will start off by sharing my current weight (in case you don’t want to do the math above) and other info which I’ll post every Monday. Root me on, heckle me do whatever you want with it.

After all, this blog is about me, me and me. Fortunately, there’s less of me than there was in February!

Good morning!

What’s up? Today is Friday for me since I took the rest of the week off to hang with the bambino a little bit. Good times.

I came across this little clip yesterday when a friend – let’s just call him “RAlonzo” sent me a link about some guy who hated American Airlines site design and redesigned a mockup for it. It was a good piece of critique but I thought the guy who actually works for AA’s reply was better. Regardless, these are the videos that hit the nail on the head when it comes to creativity for a lot of people. It also helped reinforce my drive to drag Rick the Stick out of mediocrity and into goodness. It may take 50 years, but I’m going to try!!

It’s from Ira Glass from ‘This American Life’ on NPR. Yes NPR and his show is very good. He does a great critique of his own work – after he’d been in the business for 8 years!!!

The second video talks about the importance of being different and not just cranking out more of the same, it’s shorter and worth the watch.

Good morning Mattawoman, Maryland!

I sent the following twitters this week when I accidentally renewed my annual subscription to GoComics ComicsSherpa service:

• I’m an idiot and renewed for GoComics for another year. But I figured I just can disregard a few thousand page views per month on there – can I?
• Despite it being hard to get to, the incredibly small comic and horrible statistical reporting, I think getting that many pageviews is cool!
• I mean without direct linking http://is.gd/lHhM, how can anyone find that comic in this mess: http://is.gd/lHhW

The best part is I got a twitter response back from GoComics: “@RicktheStick you’re no idiot. Glad to have you for another year.” (btw: I do have to give GoComics some Kudos for monitoring twitter for comments about them!)

My reply: “thanks for the tweet, but I’d like you to show me your appreciation! GIVE COMICSSHERPA SOME LOVE! Please (I’m asking nicely).”

I also had the highlight of my week when Brad Guigar sent me some encouragement for which I was honored and blown away with. What? You’re not familiar with Brad Guigar? You know, if I wasn’t trapped in your computer right now, I would totally fight you. He’s the mastermind behind Evil Inc. (you should head there right now and I’ll forgive you) and a part of the WebComics super group over at HalfPixel or Webcomics.com – man, I’m still blown away – that was awesome!!! A million thanks to him! What about you? Your visit is worth at least a hundred thanks – so there you go!

What?? You’re still here? I guess it’s okay, I mean after all you could take that little arrow on the screen and move your mouse over the following link until it turns into a tiny gloved hand and get that pointer finger of yours to apply a little pressure to the mouse and click said link. That would magically take you to a page that would ask you for – wait for it… your email address. That would require you to take your hands over the keyboard and apply pressure to keys that would coincidentally spell out your email address. Finally, you’d need to head on over to your email and click the incredibly patient email that’s waiting for you – asking you if you really know what you’re getting yourself into. Okay, so yesterday’s comic may have not been so clear – at least as clear as I’d planned…so I’m hoping today’s clears it up a little bit.

BTW – Before I get into this, I am extremely critical of my art – and I think I have a long, long way to go. That being said I am personally happy with the way Rick’s character design has progressed as I noted a couple of weeks ago. Thus, I’m working on tweaking Milton. One of my biggest weaknesses is arms and hands. That’s the reason Milton and a most of the other characters have the same hands as Rick. So that’s my focus when I’ve been doodling and will continue to be until I nail it. I think I’m off to a good start with the following tweak:
