If you haven’t seen, I posted an update yesterday regarding posting the New Reader’s page. So this is technically a post about a post about a page. That’s about it! For the record, I’ve cranked out some serious comics to kind of build back up that buffer!

Next week, Rick is back in the office and he gets something that he’s always wanted. I mean ALWAYS wanted. Or so he thinks he got it. Or something. I think that’s what it’s about.

Welcome back!

It’s been a great two weeks off – if you’ve missed Rick, then I thank you. It was a very relaxing time with a few nights of sleep mixed in with some being productive. Thanks as well for your patience.

I was going to introduce a dynamic new ‘New Reader’ section today, but I’ll be on a business trip through Wednesday. Essentially, that means I won’t have access to a computer to be able to tweak it if I need to – or just as importantly, promote it. So I’ll delay it a week for the sake of doing it right. Trust me – I think it’s going to be worth it. Edited: Changed my mind and got some free time on Sunday so I fixed what I needed to fix. Special thanks to napping kids and wife who worked a few hours. AWESOME!

There are two other things in the hopper, I’ll just throw out there. First, I’m working on an easy way to access everything Rick – from the comics, connecting through social media and getting everything else from Free Wallpaper, Books, Apps and Swag. That one is easy and should premier within the next week or so.

The second is a much more ambitious and intricate project. I’ve been contemplating taking the comics from before this year off the site. At least from the main access area. I’ve been toying with the idea, of making them accessible by donation only – meaning donate a certain amount of money that will be reinvested into developing the comic and you view an amount of comics commensurate with your donation.

The truth of the matter is, that with almost 800 comics, not many people are going to click on the “next” or “back” buttons to read all the comics. If it happens – it’s rare. Very rare. EXTREMELY RARE. Okay, point made right? So what’s the problem? Why not keep them accessible to everyone? Well, like I just said – not everyone wants almost 800 comics because consuming them on the site is too time consuming. I don’t even want to go back through them that way myself.

So my solution has been to create a quick viewer where you can donate a certain amount of money and get access to a commensurable amount of comics – but you only have to visit one page. The comics would load while you were reading much like videos do now on YouTube. And I don’t mean to confuse anyone – this will not be a video. You should be able to flip through the comics forward and backward at your leisure and have access to them forever.

I think that’s why it’s easy to buy a book – you can consume a number of comics in one sitting without waiting for page loads slowed down by ad servers, javascript and other unimportant graphics.

I’m working on it…along with publishing the comic 5 days a week…and raising two wonderfully fabulous tiny monsters…and working full-time… Regardless, I think it’s something that Apple’s NewsStand might be able to handle at some point, but in the meantime, I’ll see what I can come up with.

I’m not exactly sure what the title means there. Usually, I like to have some hint into the comic. Hopefully everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend and a nice short week of work. Are you still a little intrigued by this storyline? Next week Rick’s back in the fold with some unexpected happenings – at his job.

I’m sure Dan didn’t see this coming…

On a separate note, I’m heading back from a mini-vacation today so the posts have been kind of short. My apologies, but drawing at a dining room table in a condo is a lot harder when you’re worn out from the beach and entertaining two little one’s all day! Of course, I have to entertain my wife too – I shouldn’t leave her out. I’m getting dangerously close to losing my buffer, so I need to step it up or a week off may be in store. Color really makes a difference, but it also increases the production time. Whatevs – right?

Happy Memorial Day! I hope you get a chance to reflect on the sacrifice the men and women of our armed forces make on our behalf and remember those fallen to protect us.

Speaking of the heroes that wear our country’s uniform, I always want to thank someone I see in uniform, express my gratitude and show my pride, but feel cheesy about it and don’t want to embarrass them or myself. Does anyone have any recommendations on what’s the best way to show respect in these instances? Is it best not to say anything?
