Good morning!!

Earlier this week I had an IM discussion with a friend (who’s blog “Heck Yeah, Man” is pretty funny – check it out) and he was asking me questions about RTS and we touched on a new feature I’ll be offering for donations in the very near future. That lead to some other things including my family and friends that don’t read the comic, Gilbert Gottfried as Rick the Stick and how poorly the comic is drawn. Basically only interesting stuff to me, but I thought it was worthy of a post here in case you wanted some insight into what I think about RTS’s future and were curious about what a blathering idiot I am with my friends (and the patience they have to put up with me).

There is also a brief look at one of the obstacles webcomics as a community has to overcome. I’ve highlighted it with “quotes”.

NOTE: A small amount of the exact verbiage has been edited to put it into proper context.

Heck Yeah Man: so is it just on a website? or is it like in an email that goes out every day? how do you get it?
Me (RTS): Yes, it’ll be on the website, but there will be lots of extras. If you make a donation, you get the link. The idea is that people would be willing to donate $$ for some bonus comics and some of the other extras. A lot of cartoonists have a “Tip Jar” where people just donate money. Some give you something, some don’t.
HYM: “i can’t help but lol over donating, and paying”. but that’s just me, and im an asshole. i would pay for a tangible something though.
RTS: That’s the beauty and fucked up part of the internet. You get something digital and you expect it to be free. Put it on some paper and slap a cover on it and pay for it. Crazy.
HYM: and also, i’m the wrong dude to be asking. “you know i don’t give a shit about webcomics”. though i do genuinely like rts, and am pumped for killer plankton.
RTS: I know and thanks
HYM: “do you think alot of your readers have the same apathy as me?”
RTS: No – at least I don’t think so. But overall, most people don’t know anything about “webcomics”.
HYM: do you really think they’d donate?
RTS: As it is, I would gather I know about 3 hundred or so people who know or have heard I do a webcomic.
RTS: If 5 actively read it, I’d be surprised.
RTS: Although people tell me they like it.
RTS: But right now, my audience isn’t my friends.
HYM: that’s good – right?
RTS: Just like I play fantasy baseball and a lot of guys who really like baseball do, but of those same 300 people I know only a handful play fantasy baseball. It’s fine. My wife reads it on the weekends – not daily, my brothers never even look at it and my dad doesn’t go near the Internet. About 10 people from where you still and I used to work signed up. You and Trisha are the only two that read the strip. For which I’m grateful. But again, I hope I can still make a living at this even though no one I know cares. I do this for me. Just like you play guitar for you
HYM: i have the exact opposite problem. only people i know read my blog!
RTS: hahahaha
RTS: btw – two things… Got a pic of a reader who got a t-shirt. awesome pic that he dropped RTS into. Pretty funny.
RTS: Also, I wore my “Ooh Poo!” shirt yesterday. Lots of looks. That felt pretty good.
HYM: oh word, awesome.
HYM: hey where ARE THE NEW SHIRT DESIGNS FOR TODAY?? YOU SAID MONDAY!!
RTS: Dude – I worked until 4am on Sat just getting the strip done for this week. I’m working on them tomorrow night (edited: still not done). I need them done and selling by the end of the month.
RTS: I wish I never had to sleep. I want to do so much. Although sleep is pretty sweet sometimes.
HYM: i love sleeping!
RTS: The shirts will be pretty lol – I think. They’re for haters.
HYM: i can’t wait to not ever see the designs.
RTS: Did you know Linkin’ Park’s ‘One Step Closer’ was going to be RTS’s theme song. But won’t for two reasons.
RTS: First, Rick’s not as angry as I originally thought he would be
RTS: Second, I already have a sweet ass theme song – from Sawtooth (Heck Yeah Man’s music)
RTS: I need to get that back on the site.
HYM: lol @ you thinking that rts was gonna be angry!
RTS: He was originally. I wanted Gilbert Godfried to be the voice – BEFORE THE AFLAC COMMERCIALS!
RTS: I can totally see RTS being a cartoon in my head.
HYM: lol – a cartoon would be sweet. you ever do animation before?
RTS: No. And I won’t do it myself. I would have to hope and wait for someone to come to me – or if it becomes big enough I will put together a few scripts and shop it around.
RTS: But that’s probably 3 or 4 years down the road
HYM: the animating for a cartoon – a lot of busiwork, huh?
RTS: It requires a lot of patience. I have none. I barely can draw the strip. I’m telling you, in my head it’s finished before I even get to inking it. I want to move on. If I could just plug into my head, I would. The quality would be better!
RTS: Of the drawing that is. It never comes out as good as I see it in my head.
HYM: yeah that’s kind of a pain in the ass
RTS: It’s actually embarrassing. Especially when I look back at those first strips. I thought they were good at the time. It just goes to show me that I had my head so far up my own ass that it sucks. I can’t imagine how I’ll feel about the art in another year!!!
RTS: I could be suicidal!!!

Not The Normal Voices In My Head

	On top of all the noise, someone slammed into the car. I was really getting miffed until I think I knew what those noises were…

There are three weeks left on my diet – errr…Vision Quest for a smaller belly.

To recap our last four ‘Rick the Stick Diet’ posts:

Water – Drink plenty of it.
Eating – Smaller portions. Use your ‘sane brain’ to your advantage.
Motivation – Set a goal and find the mechanism that gets you going – and keeps you going.
Focus – Remember where you started, where you’re going and why your headed there.

Last week I pointed out how my not-evil wife will have bread with dinner and I’ve abstained. I don’t need the bread. Don’t need the extra calories. I miss it, but since I’ve prepared myself with my sane brain, I realize I don’t need it to enjoy my meal. Yay for me – I’ve taken an obvious add-on out of my life. Temporarily. Remember, I’m trying to lose weight now. Soon I’ll have to transition to maintaining my weight. As always, do what’s right for you and check with a doctor. I think I have to say that. Meh.

Today I’m going to point out how I’m confident that I aided my huge losses by identifying the hidden traps in my daily diet. Each of these may be small, but accumulated, they make a big difference.

Bread: I’ve mentioned how I don’t have it with dinner anymore. I don’t have it much anymore – at all. I used to wolf down a loaf or two at restaurants. Big trouble there. Before I even got to my entree, I used to have a couple loaves of bread, an appetizer and occasionally a small salad. Wow. You may have heard how complex carbohydrates metabolize throughout the body slower, yadda, yadda, yadda. I don’t know about all of that, but I can tell you that I rarely have bread anymore. Not by singling it out as much as by choosing to eat different foods which coincidentally don’t include bread.

Cheese: Awesome. Love it. Can eat a whole brick of it on anything. I eat vegetable chili. I like my chili spicy and I like to add a little non-fat sour cream. I used to have a boat load of cheese on it, but I realized that with the spices, I didn’t taste the cheese. And if you’re not tasting it, why have it? I love turkey sandwiches from deli meat. Boar’s Head is the best and has some great flavored styles. The problem was that I was having four slices of cheese on a regular sandwich. 2 American, 2 Swiss. Something I started when I was 18. The difference between then and now is about 20 something years of metabolism slow down. So I cut out the sandwiches for now. My cheese intake has been greatly reduced. If I had to put a number on it, I would say by 80%.

Alcohol: I used to drink with my wife every Friday night. For 14 years – every Friday night. Sometimes more than others. We’d play drinking games – often just the two of us. We weren’t/aren’t alcoholics, we just enjoyed having some beer, along with each other’s company and drinking games. Did I mention before that I’m competitive? She loves to beat my ass as much as anyone else. Regardless, I cut down on my Friday night consumption. I’ve stopped drinking on Friday’s about three months ago. I’d have a couple of glasses of wine during the week. But as I started to lose more and more weight, I wanted to make sure I hit my goal – so I quit the wine as well. Full disclosure – I had 2 beers this past Friday and Saturday (each night). WIth three weeks to go, I wanted to get it out of my system. No beer until July 31st night – after the final weigh-in.

So there are three things. I didn’t go cold turkey on anything. I’ve phased it out. By making decisions with my sane brain, my hungry brain hasn’t had to make many of those hard decisions. Even if I slip up, I use it as motivation to get back the focus. If you’ve noticed, I’m using all the components of everything I’ve previously discussed. This is for two reasons – the first is because it makes me look really smart and like I planned it (not at all), and second, is that it is actually how it has worked out.

This has been a process. Nothing has been easy, but nothing has been really hard either. Like I said last week – I got myself into this mess, and I’m getting my tubby ass out of it.

One final note: my clothes. I bought 3 pairs of jeans in February and when I got them, I was afraid I had gotten them too small. Now I can barely keep them on. I had to buy a smaller belt, which is now down to its second to last hole. I may need a smaller one – and that would be okay. A coworker (RAlonzo) said it looked like I had clown pants on. For the last couple of years, tucking in my shirt was not an option (thankfully I have worked at places with accommodating dress codes). Now I love tucking my shirt in every morning. Good for me. It feels great when people call me skinny and I love it. The truth is, I’m not skinny. I’m skinnier, but I’ve seen me nekked and that is the next train wreck to be fixed.

So I feel good, I look better and I’m closer to my goal. I have to go to bed now, I have to get up in 4 hours to go play basketball. Sleep is way overrated.

The Dark Side

And a fine morning it is! I’m guessing since this post has to go up the day before.

Frequent poster and now snazzy dresser Todd is wearing the coolest shirt in his collection…

Anywho, it’s a good morning in the world of Rick the Stick because, as promised, we have a photo from our good friend Todd who’s sent in an awesome photo of him wearing his RTS gear. Which he got for free because he did some work on getting John Grant into wikipedia. Why is that a big deal? Because that in turn puts Rick the Stick on wikipedia…

And it wasn’t easy. So for his efforts, I sent him a shirt. WOOHOO! I’ll post mine later in the week. We’re also waiting on Mrs. RAlonzo’s photo. If you want some gear click here.

Hope you had a great weekend! I spent a lot of quality time with my family – and that is always a bonus. I also spent a lot of time getting this week’s strips done. There’s an interesting plot twist this week, so you may want to check back. Today’s strip kick’s off a terrifying week for someone!!

Friday, Friday – WOOOHOOOO!!!

I’ve been watching some shows & movies lately and I wanted to get your thoughts if you’ve seen them.

Californication: This is a really good – sometimes really weird show. David Duchovny is solid as are all the other characters. You see Duchovny’s a chain smoking, womanizing, drinking writer. All the characters have major flaws and somehow it all just works pretty seamlessly. As a guy, one of the bonuses is that you get to see plenty of female skin. The ladies are left with a lot of half-naked Duchovny shots. For me, it’s a fair trade off. Regardless, at the end of one of the seasons, there’s a major thing that happens and I’m hoping it doesn’t ruin the aforementioned chemistry between the characters. See it if you want to know what the hell I’m talking about. You won’t be sorry – actually, we breezed right through every DVD we got sometimes watching four episodes at a clip.

W.: As in George W. Bush. As in wtf? I realize this is not a true biography yet is based on real events, but if ‘W.’ is half as bad as he’s portrayed, then I don’t get two things. And I don’t mean Josh Brolin‘s portrayal. Actually, all the characterizations are awesome. First is the obvious – how did he become President? And I think that should be a bi-partisan question. Second, he is portrayed a half-wit and buffoon who can’t get out of his own way. I realize this is a caricature of him, but c’mon! How did anyone like the guy!! After thinking about it now, I’ll write that one off as a Liberal slant. It has to be. There’s also a must see short in the bonus features. Don’t miss that one – it was scarier than the movie!!!

Out of Africa: This is an oldie, but a goodie. If you can stand the nearly 3 hours. Meryl Streep is hotter than I remember her and she nails the accent of Danish-born Karen Blixen. I saw this when it came out (I was a little younger in 1985) and I really didn’t remember any of it. But it is a very, very good film. Since it’s based in the early 1900′s it hasn’t lost much in it’s portrayal. See it.

Next in my queue is Tropic Thunder and the Dark Night. I can’t wait for either. Have any recommendations? Lemme hear ‘em!!

Okay, I’ll admit. Today was a surprise. I was thinking of how great it would be if we could get the recordings of my kisses with Joy – then Winchester hits me with a shocker!

RAlonzo goes where no man has gone before!

I was soo excited about getting this photo of the first person to wear Rick the Stick’s gear, but I didn’t want to post the photo yesterday because I wanted it to be featured on it’s own (yesterday was the diet post – and Wednesdays are about me). So here it is. My coworker, who won this shirt because of his many exemplary comments (okay, some weren’t – well most weren’t exemplary…and you could argue that some just didn’t make sense), RAlonzo!!! Congrats to RAlonzo who also won another shirt (which he got for his girlfriend) and will be sending us a photo of her as well. The shirt looks really good on RAlonzo – I’m very proud to work with such a well dressed dude.

I also sent out the third shirt to frequent commenter and reader who helped me get my Great Grandfather (and thus, Rick the Stick) on Wikipedia – Todd!!! Todd is out of town giving a speech about world piece (spelled that way on purpose). He promised to send a photo for next week!

Congratulations to all three shirt winners! I am honored that you’d consider donning something that came from this giant dome and little brain of mine!
