BabyBreak 2010

Good morning folks! Normally what you would see here is a comic, but as I’ve eluded to in earlier blog posts, my wife and I along with our two year old son are expecting to welcome in our newest addition to the family. That’s right! We’re getting an iPad!

Okay, that’s not true. We’re having a baby boy sometime within the next week – if it hasn’t happened already (I’m posting this Thursday night just in case). The good news is that I will be glad to get back to the comic as soon as possible! The bad news is (depending on who you ask) that it will be after the holidays.

I want to focus on making sure that our newborn gets my full attention (like I have any control over that). The first eight weeks are the hardest for babies (and parents) and since I ate right through a six week buffer for my first child (that I never got back), I’m assuming my 4 or 5 day buffer doesn’t stand a chance – and that’s not fair to the integrity of the comic and it’s not fair to you the reader who’s come to expect so much mediocrity from this strip.

Regardless, I will still be posting on tweets on twitter, status updates and more on facebook, articles on the Webcomic Alliance site, and podcasting with my good friends on the Webcomic Workshop. So much for babytime!! WOOOHOOO! Hey, you’ve gotta be self-reliant at some point!

That brings me to my next point which is entirely unrelated and I have no idea why I said that brings me to my next point… When the site comes back, you may notice a subtle change. I’m bringing back Rick with a tweak to his personality. You see I’ve been afraid to push too hard with the humor because I wasn’t exactly sure who my audience was. Don’t get me wrong – I’m still clueless, but I do know who comments and I do know the humor aspect could be sharper. With that being said – Rick will return with a sharper sense of humor. You know that little switch in your brain that tells you something may not be appropriate or there may be a better way to say something? Well, we’re ripping that switch right out of Rick’s head.

The reality is, that the humor will be more in line with what I know and am more comfortable with. I’m not guaranteeing it will be funnier, just sharper.

Rick will also have a girlfriend. If you’re thinking Milly, well guess again… It’s going to be Maggie… or Minnie… or Molly, whatever her name is. The reason being is that I know more about relationships than I do about being single.

To recap, I’ll be writing what I know and that my friends is not a lot. So expect me to reboot again in February! ZING!

I sincerely hope everyone has a fun, fantastic and overall great holiday season and gets back to the site safely in January. Oh and if you’re bored, Friday marked the 700th comic that I’ve posted. And I guarantee you that despite the abundance of mediocrity, one of them will make you laugh!!

    Umm; Kenard?

According to my calendar; it’s Not Quite Thursday night. Yet. So clearly you are lacking sleep!!
And poor you, left to be self reliant; sheesh! Can’t wait for the sharp Rick; as if his pointy elbows weren’t sharp enough. And that hair?

Wait a minute; I just remembered… this was about the baby! Congrats on the soon to be son! Maybe the birth will be early enough you’ll have a new addition for Thanksgiving! That would be awesome all five of you.

I am now on Babywatch 2010!

    • Ken Drab

Thanks Bren – and I like Babywatch 2010! Awesome!!

  2. Bren

Bad Bren! All snarking about you not knowing the date? Here I am adding an extra child; because your post clearly states baby makes four. Clearly I was fixated on the 5 day buffer of food, am sleep deprived as well; or am in need of reading glasses. I’m going with option number one!

    • Ken Drab

Number one is always better than number two!

      • Bren

Thanks for the both the compliment on “Babywatch 2010; clearly? There was a reason why I only ended up with one. A son. AWESOME like his mom!

        Snark!!

  3. Bearman

Congratulations on number 2. I think the 2 year old will be old enough to offer you some jokes that are right in line with my sense of humor.

    • Ken Drab

Thanks Bearman – who says he hasn’t given me ALL my material?!

  4. tmcelmurry

Congratulations Drab Family. We are so excited for ya’ll and the arrival of your new bundle of joy. Great job on the graphic above with Rick and the gang seeing the new baby. Rick definitely doesn’t want to be upstaged even by a baby. I’m looking forward to the new approach to Rick’s sense of humor after the holidays. He’s always been a bit snarky from time to time, can’t wait to see how the removal of the filter switch affects his ability to carry on a relationship with Milly, Maggie, Margie….Molly.

I hope ya’ll have a wonderful Holiday Season. Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanza, Feliz Navidad, Happy Chanukah, Happy Festivus….and a Happy New Year. I’ll be lookin’ for ya on Twitter, Facebook, and listening for ya on the Podcasts.

Congratulations again to you and your family on the new addition.

    • Ken Drab

Thanks Todd! I’m very excited about our addition.

I’d also like to add that i’m thankful for everyone’s comments today and I am always appreciate of the amount of help you’ve given me. Can’t wait until 2011!!

  5. Bren

    Ahem;

Does this mean we do indeed have an addition to the family? Early enough for Family Turkey Day?? Because methinks tmcelmurry’s comment clearly states congrats!! And I am so filled with awesomeness; that I knew baby would be early. But this is clearly not about me…

Clearly? This is about the wonderful news of a beautiful bundle of joy!! Congratulations to the entire Drab family; especially Mom. Because she did all the work, after all. ;-P ,

Let us know what to call Baby Drab. Babies deserve to be called by their own name! Congratulations, again. I am thrilled to hear there’s a new little bundle of cuddle.

    • tmcelmurry

      Hey Bren,

I don’t have any inside info, and I’ve seen Ken on twitter this morning so I’m pretty sure at this point Baby Drab #2 has not arrived yet. You know what we need to do though, we need to make a guess on possible arrival day.

My official guess: Tuesday afternoon between 2pm and 4pm.

      • Ken Drab

I have Todd blocked for 11/23 from 2-4pm. Anyone else care to make a guess?

  6. jhorsley3

Hey I’m expecting a baby soon too! Hopefully middle December! Good job at stealing my baby thunder in the web-comic world!

In reality congrats on the new baby, the lost hours of sleep and the lost productivity you will surely get. But if I can keep doing comics 5 times a week after 3 (soon to be 4) kids you should be fine with 2!

    • Ken Drab

      Congrats J!

WOW!! You’re on your 4th?! Man alive!! I have deep admiration for you in that regard!! WOW!

  7. Bren

    Hey tmecelmurry,

I won’t use my awesome superpowers to be dragged into a baby pool. Although; I wlll admit they come in handy finding front row parking when necessary. That? And avoiding barely escaping death or injury; but only when I’m driving. HA!

    jhorsley3:
Congratulations on your upcoming bundle of joy, as well! And they may be stealing your web-comic baby thunder? But I am happy for you and your family every bit as much! You and your wife must be exhausted.

    • Ken Drab

Bren – feel free to jump in with a guess! We’ll have a pool! :-)

  8. jhorsley3

    @Bren
We are very exhausted. I only manage to keep my comic going because of some amazing help I have with co-creators.

  9. maddog

You think it’s cute now wait till it gets some age to it. BAM!! Instant nightmare………………..I’m still in the middle of my nightmare LOL ……Someone help please

  10. jhorsley3

@Ken Drab – It’s a handful but after 3 they start taking care of themselves!

    • Ken Drab

Haha! Funny quote from the office two weeks ago where Dwight says he’s been raising kids his entire life “in the Shrute family the youngest raises the rest of the children”!

  11. Marty

Hey Kenard!! Congrats……maybe the baby will be born on Nov. 24….which is my b-day!!

Now Michelle will have 3 kids in the house!!! Just kidding…..:-)

    • Ken Drab

Happy birthday Marty Melle! Miss hanging out with ya! Hope all is well in Miami…

  12. Bren

I hear from others that if spaced appropriately? The older ones do all the work. And having help from your co-creators? Well; let’s always divine when you have a help from your co-creators.

    Another babywatch 2010!! Yay!!

  13. Bren

Clearly I am over come with giddiness (or I’ve NO idea where to respond!). Personally I choose the former. Of course I could be lost in space; but makes no difference.

Regardless? Seriously? As much as I’d LOVE to get in on the pool? That would be cheating! Seriously; and besides even if I were to get in on it; every time I EVER entered a pool for money? I lose. Now fun stuff? I’m awesomely great!

And if you want me to play? You’re gonna have to pay! :-D

Hee hee! I do work on a sliding scale; though.

Otherwise; I’d dive right into the pool! HAHA!!!

  14. heck yeah, man

rofl today. can’t wait to hear about rb2.0!

    • Ken Drab

RB2.0 – he better be bigger, faster, stronger…or else! Actually or else nothing. Same amount of crazy love for the little bugger. Now, if he would only get here!

  15. Bren

Crazy love? That’s a great song!! I never knew Poco was singing about babies. Huh!

Any signs of progress? Or are we keeping everything hush-hush?

  16. tmcelmurry

Well it looks like my guess was totally wrong….I told you to get that woman some spicy food Ken…SPICY FOOD!! So who’s gonna guess a Thanksgiving Baby? OK, I’m gonna put my self in for another marker, I’m stating now early Sunday Morning, between 2am and 4am he’ll start to make his arrival, delivery will be around 9am or 10am….So put me down for 11/28 @ 9:30am.

I hope you and your family have a very happy and blessed Thanksgiving Ken.

    • Ken Drab

We had spicy vegetarian chili last night. The actual due date is this coming Sunday so we’re not worried yet!

  17. Bren

@tmcelmurry Isn’t that against the rule to pick a new guess if you’re first one is wrong?? I call penalty!! And who is it that will be tweeting the exact time of birth? Because I need to go follow! Will it be Rick, Ken… who??? Inquiring minds need to know..

That said; Babywatch 2010 is an awesome string; and I. Am. LOVING IT!!

I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving!

  18. Ken

    Testing!

  19. George

Congratulations on the new baby, Ken!

  20. dgriff13

So late to he game here, but I just wanted to say CONGRATS and I hope you can scrounge up some time in there to breathe, relax and enjoy the family and friends you have… yknow, those things that a webcomic generally takes you away from ;0)

So happy for you and your fam!

  21. Tony

Congrats on the up & coming birth. Hope it all goes well & you don’t suffer too much .Everyone knows the Dad has it tougher than the Mum but we just let the girls think the opposite.
