A little too cheery? It’s February already – c’mon!! Next month I’ll be in Chicago – is it cold in Chicago in March? I’m assuming the answer is HELL YES! Regardless, if it’s below 60º then it’s too cold for me. I left the north for a reason!! February was always brutal for me when I was up in New York. No leaves on the trees, old frozen and dirty snow, and
gray skies for weeks at a time. It depresses me just writing that! UGH.

Good morning,

The title of today’s comic has an additional meaning. I appreciate the feedback I get. I really do – good and bad – in fact, it’s what drives me to do the comic. Especially five days a week, it’s not easy, but I love it.

So today I wanted to take a second and explain that this comic is a saga. It was always meant to be an ongoing story of Rick, his inheritance, his finding out his history and ultimately his continual struggle against the Cartoon Mob Syndicate (CMS) trying to steal his money. The reason I’m making this statement is in regards to the story arcs – and in particular – the length of them.

Granted, I’m not the most concise with words, as evidenced by the length of this post, but I think there’s an important relevance to help build the back story to the comic. I try to continually remember that not everyone knows what I know about the comic, that not everyone reads every day and someone may be reading the comic for the first time – every day. This is a four panel format (most days) and in comparison to some longer formed comics it’s more of a challenge to tell a story and try to be funny at the same time. I tried for a while to make shorter story arcs and have different unrelated adventures, but I felt like I was losing interest in writing and I lacked direction. I’ll be honest, most weeks I don’t know the exact path the overall story is taking until Thursday or Friday the week before. I know in a general sense where the story is headed, but I haven’t worked everything out. But I like writing that way, I like the fact that there is an overall sense of knowing we’re going somewhere with all of this.

This isn’t Peanuts, Garfield or Beetle Bailey, it’s more like a dumbed-down version of Doonesbury. I use “dumbed-down” for lack of a better term.

I view each story arc as a chapter. Each chapter interdependent on the overall theme of the comic – just like a book. So there will be long story arcs, but I’m trying to mix it up like I have the last two weeks. In this instance it may be the same story, but it feels a little different. This week is a basic look, but I’m trying to fill in some blanks for those who read often and I’m trying to build a base to move the story forward.

I hope this sounds like an explanation and not defensive rambling non-sensical drivel. I enjoy feedback and welcome constructive criticism. I’d humbly like to think I’ve grown more as an artist and hopefully as a writer. All a result of incorporating that criticism I’ve had the fortune to receive. But I have to get back to basics. I have to write how I’m comfortable, I have to write what keeps me interested. I’m just hoping that it coincides with what people want to read and continue to join Rick and I on this saga…

What a great week – I appreciate all the comments! I was really excited and had no idea whether this would work or I could do what I had in mind. I was pretty happy with the way it turned out.

Now as we see, Rick is back with Milton – is that the end of the saga? Next we’ll find out a little bit about the last two weeks. Hope to see you then!!

Good morning!!

Surprise!! Hope you like today’s twist! The last panel is a shot of Tampa Avenue in downtown Tampa, Florida. As you can tell, the city was rockin’ midday last Friday! I struggled getting the circuit pic for this comic until late Monday night which meant I couldn’t start drawing in the characters until I did. So this comic is officially the latest comic I’ve ever posted. Aside from being the first photocomic I’m posting*.

* I did do a guest comic for a photocomic (Union of Heroes) and there were also photos in a comic reveling Winchester’s background as a spy, but never a full photocomic. I’m actually pleased with the way it came out – for me!
